NC State jumps out early, cruises to 12-3 win over NC A&T

Wolfpack uses a pair of early three-run homers and a great relief appearance by Cam Cotter to earn the victory

SO C/DH Patrick Bailey crushed a three-run home run in the first inning and JR SS Will Wilson cranked a three-run home run of his own in the second to put NC State up early. The Wolfpack never looked back in a big win over in-state opponent North Carolina A&T on Wednesday night in Greensboro.

Redshirt-freshman RHP Cam Cotter came on in relief to pitch 5.2 innings of one-run ball in earning his second win of the season on the mound. Cotter (5.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K) was stellar for the Wolfpack after starting pitcher Nick Swiney couldn’t make it out of the first inning.

JR LF Jonny Butler and Wilson led off the game with back-to-back walks leading up to Bailey’s first inning home run; his 5th home run of the season. In the second inning, FR 3B Vojtech Mensik reached on a one-out single, was followed by another Butler walk, and then Wilson smacked his 8th home run of the season to push NC State’s lead to 6-2. Wilson’s home run ties him with SR 1B Evan Edwards for the team lead.

The Wolfpack would add another run in the 4th, three in the 5th, and one more in the 6th as the game became a formal matter from there on. NC State would add their final run in the 8th inning.

NC A&T, who had knocked off South Carolina in Columbia on Tuesday night, had a depleted bullpen coming into the game, so once this contest became a battle of relief arms the game swung in NC State’s favor.

WIlson (2-for-4, 2B, HR, BB, 3 R, 4 RBI), Bailey (2-for-5, HR, R, 4 RBI), and Mensik (4-for-4, HR, HBP, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB) led the way offensively for the Pack. Butler walked three times and scored three runs in the game, while Edwards (1-for-2, BB, HBP, R, SB) also reached base three times in the game.

SO LHP David Harrison and RS-SR RHP Nolan Clenney combined to pitch the last three innings of hitless, scoreless relief for State.

NC State is back in action this weekend, hosting ACC foe Virginia in a three-game set starting Friday at 6:30pm.
