Glancing at the ACC baseball standings as the regular season wraps up

There’s a lot left to be settled in terms of seeding for the conference tournament.

With one weekend left in the regular season, 11 teams have clinched a spot in the ACC tournament, leaving one spot still up for grabs. NC State is one of the 11 safely in and will just be playing for seeding against UNC this weekend. There’s a big jumble of teams in the middle, so it’s anybody’s guess how things end up sorting out.

Current league standings:

NC State cannot win the Atlantic Division since Louisville holds the head-to-head tiebreaker on the Wolfpack but a second-place finish is realistic with Florida State playing at Louisville this weekend.

A sweep of UNC would probably earn the Pack the No. 3 seed for next week, and if I’m looking at this correctly, State can do no worse than the No. 7 seed regardless of what happens in Chapel Hill. Clemson is the only team outside the top seven that can catch State in the win column, and State has the head-to-head tiebreaker.

But seeding for the tournament probably isn’t all that important, given the pool-play crap-shoot format, not to mention that there isn’t a dominant team in the league this season. For the sake of appearances and the NCAAs, the higher finish the better, though. The Pack’s got work to do in order to get back into the conversation for a hosting spot.
