Tell me about this team

It’s still super early in the season, so I’d recommend checking out the non-conference opponent preview we did just before the season started to catch up on what to expect of the Longwood baseball team this year.

As for what’s happened on the field thus far, the Lancers dropped three of four at home to a Purdue Fort Wayne program that’s won a grand total of 27 games over the last three years. One of those losses this past weekend was an 11-0, seven inning setback. So things could be going better, you could say.

The Lancers did at least salvage the final game of the series (11-8), so they’ll be riding some momentum coming into the game against NC State.

Who’s on the mound for these guys?

Tuesday: RHP Gage Williams (SO)

Key Players:

LF Jack Schnell (JR) - .462/.529/.615, 2 2B, 1 R, 5 RBI, 3 BB, 2 K. Off to the best start of his career, even if it’s not sustainable over the long term. The left-handed hitter has struggled with the K% throughout his career.

RF Andrew Gorham (rSO) - .429/.467/.429, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 4 K, 1-2 SB. JUCO transfer who doesn’t have a lot of home run power or speed, but can handle the bat pretty well.

SS Ricky Jimenez (JR) - .357/.357/.500, 2 2B, 3 R, 3 RBI, 0 BB, 4 K, 1-1 SB. Another JUCO transfer, Jimenez is originally from Miami. Not a real threat on the basepaths, but he has decent pop in his bat.

2B Antwaun Tucker (SR) - .214/.353/.357, 0 2B, 1 3B, 5 R, 0 RBI, 2 BB, 2 K, 3-4 SB. Has stolen double-digit bases each season at Longwood. Doesn’t have the BB% that you’d want from a leadoff hitter, but can get the job done.

RHP Gage Williams (SO) - 0-4, 13.03 ERA/3.31 WHIP/.452 OBA, 9.2 IP, 19 H, 15 R, 14 ER, 13 BB, 7 K in 2019. 6’4 who had his freshman year cut short due to injury.

RHP Colton Hutt (JR) - 0-0, 0.00/0.50/.000, 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. JUCO transfer who is transitioning from being a starter in the JUCO ranks to a bullpen arm with the Lancers. More of a contact-based control pitcher.

LHP Aiden McEvoy (FR) - 0-0, 0.00/1.00/.143, 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K. Big 6’3 freshman who has apparently developed greatly since getting to campus. Has a lot of potential.

RHP Tyler Morgan (SR) - 2-6, 3.83/1.42/.243, 56.1 IP, 53 H, 33 R, 24 ER, 27 BB, 71 K in 2019. Not sure why Morgan didn’t pitch yet this year and I can’t find anything about an injury to him. Strange.

Quick! Fun Facts!

NC State leads the all-time series against these teams 4-0, including sweeping a three game series against Longwood during current Lancers coach Ryan Mau’s first season at the helm (2015).

The Lancers feature a freshman from Cary (Middle Creek HS) in RHP Dominick D’Ercole.

Longwood has had ten players drafted in their history (one reached the majors: OF Michael Tucker). Oddly enough, four of those ten players (including Tucker) were drafted by the Kansas City Royals between 1988 and 1992.

NC State will be sending junior LHP David Harrison to the mound for his season debut. Harrison has been flying a bit under the radar coming into the season, but I’m high on what he can do on the mound and the impact he can provide this year for the Wolfpack.

Outcome: NC State takes the game, 8-2.
