NC State’s pitching was good enough Friday to deliver a win, but the offense was not; on Saturday, the Wolfpack made sure that another strong effort on the mound would not be in vain.
The Wolfpack again jumped on Notre Dame early, scoring a pair in the top of the first. A Luca Tresh single scored Tyler McDonough from second and advanced Austin Murr to third; Murr would score on a Jose Torres sac fly.
What would prove the game-winning run came in the second inning, when a Terrell Tatum ground out scored Devonte Brown, who’d led off the inning with a double.
In the third inning, State plated another leadoff double to take a 4-0 lead, which held until the Irish got a couple back in the sixth. Devonte Brown’s solo shot in the eighth—he’s had a great weekend at the dish—capped the scoring.
NC State starter Sam Highfill went 5-2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out three and walked three. Evan Justice was outstanding the rest of the way, allowing just two hits while striking out four and walking none.
The Pack will go for the series win on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
