Elliott Avent collected his 900th win at NC State on Tuesday night as his Wolfpack squad put a hurtin’ on the visiting Appalachian State Mountaineers. NC State never trailed in the game, but it was relatively tight until the Pack blew this one wide open with a nine-run sixth inning.

Jonny Butler led off the bottom of the sixth with a ground out, and then the on-base parade began. The next 10 Wolfpack batters would reach base, three of them via walk. JT Jarrett’s bases-loaded double scored the first two runs of the inning. Run-scoring singles by Tyler McDonough, Luka Tresh, and Jose Torres would follow, which brought up Butler for the second time in the frame—and he delivered a double this time.

Vojtech Mensik capped the scoring in the sixth with a two-run double to make the score 13-2—that was Mensik’s second hit of the inning. The bottom of the sixth took about 40 minutes, and App had to make two pitching changes before eventually stopping the bleeding.

On the mound, NC State starter Chris Villaman put together a second consecutive strong mid-week start, allowing one run on just three hits in six innings of work. He struck out seven and walked two.

NC State will return to league play this weekend with a series at Boston College.
