Bobby Lutz reportedly leading candidate for Appalachian State job (Update: Lutz staying)

USA TODAY Sports

UPDATE: From the man himself:

Speculation about Bobby Lutz's future at NC State is something we've had to deal with ever since he arrived three seasons ago, and here we go again. This time the potential landing spot is Appalachian State, per a report from Jim Utter and Joe Giglio at the News & Observer:

Lutz has been in discussions with Appalachian State about its vacancy the past several days, sources said. The school fired Jason Capel after four seasons and a 53-70 record.

App State had apparently been eyeing VCU assistant Mike Rhoades first, but he recently got the head coaching gig at Rice.

A move to Boone makes sense for Lutz, given his long history of coaching in this state and the fact that he'll be able to maintain a lot of recruiting connections. Inheriting a program that won just five games against I-A foes last season is probably not the most ideal of situations, but there's obviously no guarantee that he could find a better job next year, or the year after that, or whenever.

Lutz wants to be a head coach again--we've always known that--and if it happens that this is the job, best of luck to him.
