Dennis Smith Jr. named ACC Freshman of the Year

Smith also earned second-team All-ACC honors.

NCAA Basketball: Virginia at North Carolina State Rob Kinnan-USA TODAY Sports

The 2016-17 ACC all-conference basketball teams and award winners were announced Sunday afternoon. The lone NC State player to receive recognition is Dennis Smith, who made the All-ACC second team and is the league’s Freshman of the Year.

DSJ also received one vote for Defensive Player of the Year, while Markell Johnson received a vote for Sixth Man of the Year.

UNC’s Justin Jackson won Player of the Year honors (I think Bonzie Colson or John Collins are more deserving, personally), though he was somehow not a unanimous first-team All-ACC selection. Seems like there’s a weird quirk in the voting every year. Jackson, Luke Kennard, Donovan Mitchell, John Collins, and Bonzie Colson make up the first-team.

Josh Pastner won Coach of the Year for leading Georgia Tech to an 11th-place finish. Makes sense!

Here is the complete list of honorees, via TheACC.com:
