If you just saw the final score, you wouldn’t figure this game for a struggle, but NC State—while never seriously threatened—led by as few as 10 points eight minutes into the second half.
From then on, NC State clobbered the hell out of Mount St. Mary’s, which went ice cold from the field. State couldn’t buy a jumper in the first half, but once they starting falling in the second, the Wolfpack ran away with it.
Sometimes in these openers, guys just gotta settle down. NC State played too fast at times in the first half, but they looked and played more relaxed over the last 20 minutes, and the Mountaineers were no longer able to dictate anything. They were the ones hitting shots in the first half, but the jumpers failed them down the stretch.
It’s amazing how quickly a basketball game can snowball; NC State outscored Mount St. Mary’s by 40 points in the second half. Forty! It does not get much better than a 65-point half.
