NC State remains well-positioned in NET rankings

I’m still not quite sure what to make of all this.

NCAA Basketball: Auburn at N.C. State Nell Redmond-USA TODAY Sports

NC State has spent a good part of the early season in the top 10 of the NCAA’s NET rankings, which is the proprietary metric it introduced as the RPI’s replacement for this year and beyond. The Wolfpack is at No. 6 today, behind Duke, Virginia, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Houston.

The Pomeroy Ratings are still a better measure of overall team quality at this point, and probably will all year—NC State is No. 20 there.

No doubt it’s good news that NC State is faring so well in the NET, but it would be a bad idea to translate that to “NC State is currently on the 2-seed line.” I would be shocked if the selection committee’s seeding choices match the NET rankings precisely.

And the committee has a bunch of different metrics it can consult this year. You can see them all here, and that ordering is probably a closer picture of the seeding situation as it stands today. NC State still looks good overall, landing in the top 20 in every tool but one. (Not sure why KPI is such a hater.)
