NC State blows past Loyola-Maryland in 2nd half for 97-64 win

The Pack improves to 12-1.

NC State has had its slow starts against inferior opponents this year, but the Wolfpack also has made a habit out of slowly wearing those teams out until they’ve got nothin’ left in the tank.

Loyola played pesky for the bulk of the first half, hanging around in striking distance, at least until the last couple of minutes, when NC State went on an 8-0 run to take a 45-30 lead into the break. The Pack never looked back from there, cruising to the 97-64 win.

The Greyhounds were showing signs of wear late in that first, with a couple of rough turnovers that helped key the Pack’s half-ending run. It was a sign of worse things to come for the visitors, as the relentless pressure led to 12 second-half Loyola turnovers.

It’s an incredible luxury to have 10 guys you can trust to be effective in your pressure defense, and this year, Kevin Keatts is utilizing it to great effect. It’s particularly evident in games like this, where nobody has to play heavy minutes—State just sends wave after wave of fresh subs at you and it inevitably becomes too much to handle.

Torin Dorn led all NC State scorers with 17 points on 7-14 shooting, and Jericole Hellems added 16. C.J. Bryce, Braxton Beverly, and Derek Funderburk were also in double figures.

NC State didn’t need Markell Johnson to score a single point in order to win by 33, which, yeah that’s pretty impressive. These guys are a lot of fun when they are rolling, and they can be a lot of fun in a lot of different lineup combinations. I know the entertainment factor can be exaggerated by horrible opponents, but this is shaping up like the most entertaining NC State team in recent memory.
