NC State did enough in the second half to give itself a chance to win in the last couple of minutes, then promptly doomed itself with some silly errors in the final 30 seconds. Ah, college basketball. Boston College made more plays in crunch time and staved off the Wolfpack rally to win, 91-87.
NC State trailed by as many as 17 in the second half and was still down double figures with 10 minutes left before beginning a huge rally to eventually tie the score. But the Wolfpack could not get the stops necessary for the complete breakthrough, and then eventually became its own worst enemy.
With the score tied at 85 and less than 30 seconds remaining, Jerome Robinson hit a short jumper to give the Eagles a two-point edge. After an NC State timeout, Al Freeman’s inbounds attempt was tipped and stolen away by BC, which then canned two free throws. Markell Johnson quickly drove the length of the floor and made a layup with seven seconds left, but he then attempted to call a timeout NC State did not have, which resulted in a technical foul, and that was that.
Kind of an anticlimactic way to go out after putting in all that work to come back, fellas. Sheesh. Let’s hope they were getting all the March stupidity out of their system before the actual tournament that matters gets underway. Because that was extremely unpleasant and I do not wish to endure anything like that again.
Al Freeman scored 21 and Omer Yurtseven had 20 to lead the Pack in this loss.
