NC State obviously could have helped itself by beating Florida State on Saturday, but the good news is that a good loss doesn’t detract from the Wolfpack’s NCAA tournament case. The Pack might be in the field if the tournament started today—Joe Lunardi still has State as the last team in.
It was the win over Duke that vaulted State into most projections and I don’t think it lost any ground by losing to FSU. NC State is in 77 of the 102 tournament projections that Bracket Matrix tracks, topping out as a 10-seed in a few places. That’s definitely a more encouraging picture than a couple weeks ago.
Bracket Matrix also rates all of these sources for accuracy, and tops among them the last few years is the gentleman who runs Bracketville, who, by the way, has NC State as a 10-seed and six teams clear of the at-large cut line. That sounds good to me; let’s go with this guy.
If NC State closes out the regular season 2-2—with both wins at home—then I’m not sure it’ll need wins in the ACC tournament to work its way into the field. But most years you can count on a bid thief or three materializing during championship week, so a couple of wins in Greensboro would still be a good idea.
