NCAA cancels all remaining winter and spring championship events, including men’s and women’s basketball tournaments

There will be no March Madness this year. The NCAA announced on Thursday afternoon that it has decided to cancel all remaining winter and spring sport championships, which of course includes the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments.

The development became increasingly certain as the day progressed and conferences around the country suspended their basketball tournaments. The ACC suspended all of the league’s athletic-related activities prior to the NCAA’s announcement, and NC State released a similar statement this afternoon.

This is, of course, a huge bummer, and I feel disappointed for all of the athletes who won’t have the opportunity to pursue a championship this year. At NC State, it particularly smarts for women’s basketball, wrestling, and swimming, which rank among the nation’s best in their respective sports this season. (Thank goodness they were able to get the ACC women’s basketball tournament in, though, damn.) Wolfpack baseball fans are also being deprived of seeing Patrick Bailey, who will be a first-round MLB Draft selection this summer. Whole thing just sucks to death.

So, uh, we got some free time now. Anybody got a deck of cards?
