The regular season starts a week from Tuesday.

NC State’s preseason tune-up against Elizabeth City State was a success in that the Wolfpack won and nobody got hurt. These are the only two requirements for an exhibition game. Jericole Hellems led all NC State scorers with 16 points on 4-7 shooting in 23 minutes. No Wolfpack player logged more than 23 minutes.

It wasn’t exactly a dominant offensive performance, but more than good enough for an easy win because ECSU turned the ball over on more than a third of its possessions. That is very bad.

It’s tough to build offensive continuity in a game like this where playing time is split about as evenly as possible across 10 guys. The officials also called a whole bunch of fouls, as these two teams combined to shoot 53 free throws. Just what everyone wants to see in a game that doesn’t count for anything!

Neither Greg Gantt nor Manny Bates played tonight. Kevin Keatts said afterward that Bates could have gone and will be ready for the opener, while Gantt is dealing with an injury that has him questionable.

Five Wolfpack players finished in double figures, including Breon Pass and Terquavion Smith—Smith got the nod as a starter, too. Those two shot a combined 5-9 from three, and NC State was 12-29 as a team from beyond the arc. On to the real thing.
