NC State unable to find replacement opponent for Saturday; regular season officially over

NCAA Basketball: N.C. State at Notre Dame Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

NC State has been trying to find a last-minute opponent ever since learning that Virginia Tech would not be making its scheduled trip to Raleigh on Saturday. This was a search for a non-conference opponent, mind you, and with the postseason so close, it’s not surprising that nobody was keen on playing.

Kevin Keatts released a quick statement on the matter via Twitter:

While we have made significant efforts to find a replacement opponent for Saturday, the timing with postseason so close has prevented us from finding a matchup. I’m sorry that Braxton, Devon and D.J. won’t get to experience a traditional senior day, but we will find a way to honor them appropriately. I’m also very sorry for the many fans who were looking forward to finally seeing us in person on Saturday. It hasn’t been the same without you this season and I was looking forward to seeing some of #WPN in PNC Arena on Saturday.

We’ll turn our attention to Greensboro and the ACC tournament. I love how my team is playing right now and we’re excited for the next opportunity. Go Pack!

Losing the opportunity to play Virginia Tech did not help State’s already-longshot NCAA tournament chances, and it was going to be a tough ask to convince anybody in the tournament picture to play a game this weekend, with a quick turnaround to league tournaments next week.

I guess State will just have to go ahead and win the ACC tournament.
