In some non-Gottfried news, here are some scheduling notes for football and basketball that popped up Wednesday:
-- The football program has agreed to a home-and-home series with Old Dominion beginning in 2014; State will host ODU and make the return trip the following season.
"This is the first of what I believe will be many BCS schools that will agree to play Old Dominion home-and-home," coach Bobby Wilder said.
"People on a national stage realize how good the high school football is here in Hampton Roads. They want to come into this market. That's why I believe more BCS schools will want to come play Old Dominion."
As Dave pointed out on Twitter, we're also scheduled to play a road game at South Alabama that season, and it's a bit strange that we'd decide to play both of those contests in the same season. Both opponents will be members of the FBS when we play them--that's not the issue--it's just that you don't see a lot of power conference schools double up on these lose-lose-situation road games in a single season. Think of the hit to our strength of schedule and therefore our national title hopes! I always figured we'd buy our way out of that USA game, and who knows, we may still. I have a quarter lying around here somewhere if the athletics department needs donations.
-- On the hoops side, Cincinnati athletics director Whit Babcock revealed in a radio interview that NC State will play the Bearcats next season. That'll be a road game for the Wolfpack. We just can't quit you, Cincinnati.
