Never underestimate the chance for surprises in football recruiting. After nabbing four-star running back Nyheim Hines on Friday, NC State was expected by most to pick up a commitment from consensus three-star athlete Mike Hughes on Monday. Hughes, though, had other plans, committing to UNC over offers from the Wolfpack, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Ole Miss, South Carolina, and Virginia, among plenty of others.
GIMME A RED LIGHT ER CANCEL THE RED LIGHTS.
Hughes is a consensus three-star prospect in the 2015 class, though both Rivals and ESPN consider him a four-star recruit. There's still some question about where he ends up on the field in college; he played on both sides of the ball in high school, and his 5'10" frame could land him in a few different places. Defensive back is probably where he would have begun his career at NC State
Both Scout and 247 list him at cornerback, ranking him 66th and 36th at the position, respectively. (Recruiting rankings may vary, ditto their mileage.)
