Dave Doeren has done a fantastic job of mining talent in the Charlotte area since he came on board here, and that has paid off significantly. On Saturday afternoon, he added another Charlotte prospect to the fold with the verbal commitment of offensive lineman Ikem Ekwonu.

Ekwonu is a high three-star prospect, and a top-30 player in North Carolina. His offer sheet is impressive: UNC (still trying at football, apparently), West Virginia, UVA, Maryland (heh), Georgia Tech, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt, among others. He also has offers from Harvard and Yale. Darned overachiever!
Ekwonu is listed at 6’4 and 288 by 247Sports, and while they list him as a guard prospect, I’m guessing he could also grow into a place at tackle. I mean, if he’s already 290, it ain’t gonna take that much. And height is overrated in these spots, too.
With Ekwonu’s addition, State’s 2019 recruiting class ranks 21st in the 247 composite. This is as healthy as State football recruiting has been since the early days of the Chuck Amato era.
