It’s too bad this couldn’t have come under more pleasant immediate circumstances, but hey, history is history. The first edition of the 2017 College Football Playoff rankings were released on Tuesday night, and NC State is No. 20, tracking closely with the AP/Coaches. In the rather brief history of the CFP top 25, this is the first time the Wolfpack has made the cut. We’re playoff contenders!
Okay, maybe not so much. But then again, ... but no, stop it, brain, stop it.
The initial CFP top four are Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame, and Clemson, in that order. The Irish, notably, have gotten far more credit from the playoff committee than they have by the major polls. After watching them for three hours last weekend, I have no quibbles with their placement. Nor with Clemson’s, for that matter.
So NC State gets a shot at being a playoff spoiler for Clemson this weekend, but that is not really what the Pack’s using as motivation here, seeing as how a win would be enormous for State’s ACC title chances. That’s the only goal that matters now.
