Et tu, Dave?

We have ourselves a bit of drama, it would appear, as tensions between NC State head coach Dave Doeren and athletics director Debbie Yow are mounting over contract negotiations, per USA Today’s Dan Wolken. According to Wolken, Doeren has been actively trying to get involved with other schools, including Tennesse, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State.

The fascinating nugget here is that Doeren apparently was really close to being the next head coach at Ole Miss; the Rebels eventually chose to remove the interim tag from Matt Luke. (Probably was a lot cheaper to go that route.)

Mississippi State has also hired a new head coach not named Dave Doeren, while Tennessee may be in the process of securing Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm, per various internet rumblings this afternoon.

Doeren has already earned an automatic 1-year extension for winning eight games, and also got a $100,000 raise as a result. His current deal with NC State runs through 2020.

So ... what to make of all this? Do we care enough to retain Doeren that we should maybe overpay a bit to do so? Is his relationship with Yow irreparable, if Wolken’s report is entirely accurate? Guess we’ll know soon enough.
