For the second straight year, NC State went the graduate transfer route to try to find a solution at place kicker, and for the second straight year, it hasn’t worked out. After missing yet another short field goal try on Saturday, Carson Wise is on the bench, perhaps for good.
Kyle Bambard is back on top of the depth chart at placekicker this week, and why not—it’d be damn near impossible for him to perform any worse than Wise has this season. Wise is only 6-12 on the season despite 11 of those 12 attempts coming from inside 40 yards, and he is a horrific 2-7 between 30 and 39 yards out. Those are supposed to be high-percentage attempts. Supposed to be.
Bambard returned against Clemson to make a key field goal in the final two minutes, and while that was basically from extra point distance, it probably sealed Wise’s fate.
