Kelvin Harmon is in the midst of a great season, and he is without doubt a future pro. Dave Doeren said Wednesday that Harmon will be participating in the Senior Day ceremony Thursday night, and while he cautioned not to read too much into it, it’s pretty obvious that Harmon intends to declare for the draft following this season.
Doeren on the matter, via The Wolfpacker:
“He is going to go through Senior Day,” Doeren said. “He has not made any decisions. This is a milestone type thing, and he has a lot of family coming, which is very rare. He’ll go through like Ryan [Finley] and [Bradley] Chubb and get the NFL feedback. Sometime during the bowl, we’ll sit down with him and his dad and we’ll decide and he’ll decide.”
You can go ahead and figure Harmon is gone, and it makes a lot of sense, given that he’s being projected by more than a few folks as a clear first-rounder. CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson has him going at No. 7 overall, and if he’s gonna be that high of a pick, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever for him to return for his senior season.
The other factor is that NC State will be breaking in a new quarterback next season, and if said quarterback struggles a bit, it’s going to affect Harmon’s numbers. It’s not fair, but anything that appears to be a down season is going to hurt him with pro scouts. He’s going to hit career-highs this year, and the shrewd move is to cash those in.
So it appears we have another month or so to enjoy Harmon in an NC State uniform. He’s meant a lot to the program in helping it return to respectability, and he’s one of the all-timers at that position for NC State. He will be missed dearly, but it’s time he went and got paid.
