Ted Roof is leaving NC State for the Appalachian State defensive coordinator gig, according to a report from Yahoo! Sports’ Pete Thamel. Roof was hired by Dave Doeren prior to the 2018 season and was officially the Assistant Head Coach/Co-Defensive Coordinator, Assistant to the Regional Manager, and safeties coach.

Roof was hired by Doeren after the NCAA expanded the number of assistant coaches schools were allowed to have on staff.

And Roof is, of course, familiar with new App head coach Eli Drinkwitz.

Roof’s departure is not something I would consider a significant loss for NC State. I mean, I’m sure he was helpful with breaking down film and game-planning, but I don’t know that he had much value in recruiting. His exit gives Doeren the opportunity to perhaps bring in someone with a better reputation in recruiting. I’m sure Dave Huxtable can manage the defense fine without a co-helper.
