NC State’s depth chart at RB behind Reggie Gallaspy remains murky

Which freshman is going to step up this fall?

NCAA Football: North Carolina State at Wake Forest Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

NC State wrapped up fall camp on Tuesday and will begin implementing its game plan for James Madison on Thursday—game week is so close! And while a lot is settled in the two-deep, Dave Doeren is still trying to figure out which running back(s) will figure into the rotation behind starter Reggie Gallaspy.

This is what Doeren said to media members following practice on Tuesday:

Reggie is our starter, as you guys know, and we’re still working on who is going to get the ball after him. I think there are options. Nakia Robinson, Trent Pennix, Ricky Person, Brady Bodine, but it’s not solidified yet.

Person is one of the players who’s been banged up during camp, unfortunately, and he’ still not all the way back. The staff is gradually working him back into the mix, and what that means for his Week 1 status, I don’t know.

If he can’t go, then the backup role falls to probably Robinson and Pennix, who are also freshmen. It’s a bit alarming to have to rely on a group of guys without a single college carry, but hey, this is how it goes sometimes. The sooner Person can get back to 100%, the better off State will be.
