NC State starting RT Justin Witt out; CB Taiyon Palmer done for season

Well this is extremely not helpful.

Dave Doeren’s press conference on Monday included some unfortunate injury news—probably the most significant is the loss of starting right tackle Justin Witt, who was hurt in the FSU game and will not play Thursday. Reserve cornerback Taiyon Palmer suffered a season-ending injury in that game as well.

Witt has started every game this season at right tackle and is one of the few experienced guys up front returning from last year. With him out, NC State is shuffling Emanuel McGirt over to right tackle (that’s the blind side now since Hockman is a lefty) and freshman Ikem Ekwonu will get the nod at left tackle. Ekwonu hasn’t made a start this season but has been on the field plenty—he’s logged nearly 200 snaps this year.

Palmer had been seeing more time of late, and his loss is another rough setback for an already thin position group. Nick McCloud might be able to play some this week, possibly maybe. Actually it’s kinda hard to tell from Dave’s remarks this afternoon:

“Nick plans to be back as soon as he can be. And so the goal is this game. And if it’s not this game, the goal will be next game, and we’ll just keep going that way. If you end up in that scenario, we’ll get there. But his goal is to help us win this year.”

But McCloud is not listed on the depth chart. Teams also are not required to post an injury report anymore, so we’ll continue to have no idea where McCloud stands on the ol’ probable/questionable/doubtful spectrum.

Doeren confirmed that Ricky Person won’t play this week, which is no surprise considering how bad his injury looked when it happened. I’m just glad that it ended up not being a season-ending setback.
