It was highly unlikely that all three of the quarterbacks who saw time for NC State in 2019 would be back next season, since obviously there isn’t enough playing time to go around. On Sunday, Matt McKay announced that he entered his name into the transfer portal.

McKay began the season as the starter but after being lifted for Bailey Hockman in the Florida State game, he made only a brief appearance in one more game the rest of the year and did not attempt any passes. He spent more than half of the year as the odd man out, so it is not surprising that he wants to find an opportunity elsewhere.
It’s too bad that it couldn’t work out for McKay at State, and I feel like he wasn’t really put in the best position to succeed. Maybe with more substantial changes to the offense that put more of a focus on his running ability, things could have been different.
All the best to Matt at his next school.
