Thayer Thomas, the former walk-on NC State wide receiver who also returns punts, throws touchdown passes, and occasionally plays outfield for the Wolfpack Baseball team, has appropriately been named to the Paul Hornung Award watch list. The redshirt-junior from Wake Forest, NC, was one of 50 players named to the watch list.

Over his first two years of competition with the Wolfpack, Thomas has hauled in 65 passes for 717 yards and 6 touchdowns, while also averaging 11.2 yards per return on 26 punt returns, including one touchdown. He’s also completed 4-of-7 passes for 130 yards and 2 touchdowns, with an I-guess-it’s-okay 307.4 QB Rating.

So, yeah, his being named to the watch list for an award handed out to the most versatile player in college football seems justified.

Thomas is the 4th Wolfpack player to be named to a preseason award watch list, joining Cary Angeline (Tight End), Christopher Dunn (Placekicker), and Trenton Gill (Punter).
