Media days! Watch lists! Smell that offseason normalcy! As the watch lists start to roll out prior to the college football season, NC State should be well represented and indeed already has a couple of players earning notice.
Running back Zonovan Knight is on the watchlist for the Maxwell Award, which is the off-brand Heisman, awarded to the “College Football Player of the Year.” Bam’s not going to win that one, I don’t think. He’s also on the Doak Walker watch list, which is the award that goes to the nation’s best running back. Better shot there.
Linebacker Payton Wilson is on the watch list for the Bednarik Award, which goes to the nation’s top defensive player. We know that if Wilson stays healthy that he’ll be super productive, and if the team has a good year as well (this still seems to be a prerequisite), who knows, he might have a legit shot at winning this award. No doubt he’ll be in the running for the Butkus Award (top linebacker) as well.
The Davey O’Brien Award (top quarterback) watch list is also out, though Devin Leary isn’t on it. That’ll change if Leary gets off to the start to 2021 we expect out of him, he just hasn’t played enough to warrant the national attention.
