NC State and Tony Gibson have agreed to a new three-year extension worth $1.5 million annually, per a report from FootballScoop. This represents a bump of $200k per year, as he’d just signed a three-year deal worth $1.3 per season last December.
If he keeps on delivering top-20 defenses (and receiving interest from schools for their head coaching vacancies), he’ll keep on getting these new deals. It was another productive year on the field for his unit, which despite losing a lot of veteran talent proved to be very good once again.
The Pack’s 2023 defense ranks 19th in SP+ after finishing 2022 at No. 13, and while the cupboard was hardly bare this year, Gibson still did a hell of a job developing a defense with a lot of new faces. They got better as the year progressed and provided the foundation for State’s late-season surge. I’d say that merits a raise.
Gibson is the ACC’s highest-paid defensive coordinator, and is better-compensated than most G5 head coaches.
