NC State’s improvement in wrestling over the last half decade is an incredible story—this is not traditionally a strong sport for southern schools, but the Wolfpack has been re-writing history under Pat Popolizio. On Friday night, the No. 6 Wolfpack beat No. 12 Nebraska easily—in Lincoln.

Over the last few years, State has won duals at Oklahoma State, at Iowa, and at Nebraska (twice!). That’s crazy talk. The team’s run of success against top-20 teams both inside and outside of the ACC is highly impressive and makes the program a fine poster child for the overall improvement of the athletics department under Debbie Yow.
This Wolfpack team is currently ranked sixth nationally and will once again contend for the ACC championship with Virginia Tech, which is State’s only peer within the conference.
It is amazing how much things can change in a sport with the right coaching staff in place—NC State has a rich history in wrestling, but it has never been a consistent elite player on the national level like this. Fun times.
