Finishing in the top 25 of the Director’s Cup has been Debbie Yow’s goal since she became athletics director at NC State, and that mission is now accomplished. The Wolfpack closed out the 2017-18 athletic year at No. 15 nationally, easily the highest finish in school history. State had never before finished in the top 25.
Upgrades have been made pretty much across the board over the last decade or so, in terms of both coaching and facilities, and the proof is in the results this year. State has established a few dominant programs, and nearly all of its programs at the very least contend for post-season berths.
That is a tough thing to build, especially given NC State’s budgetary constraints relative to the rest of the power-five schools.
Now we just gotta figure out a way to translate this whole top-15 business to football and men’s basketball, because, ultimately, those sports are the only measurement by which an athletics department is judged.
