NC State’s athletics department had another strong year in 2020-21, and despite getting no points from one of its revenue sports, the Wolfpack finished finished at No. 23 in the Directors’ Cup.
Mind you, it would have been a top-20 finish if the baseball program were granted the points it earned. But there is a stupid rule on the books which says that any team that qualifies for the postseason but is unable to compete in any portion of it is given five points.
You would think at the very least they could allocate points for the latest round completed—i.e., giving State points for reaching the Supers—but no, I guess that would make too much sense.
Anyway, bottom line is that NCSU was shorted over 70 points as a result, and that’s the difference between finishing 19th and finishing 23rd. Either way, it’s another fine finish for an athletics department that is nowhere near the top 25 in terms of budget.
