Trea Turner apologizes for insensitive tweets from 2011 and 2012

MLB: Washington Nationals at Miami Marlins Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Trea Turner is the latest MLB player to have some unfortunate past behavior on Twitter discovered by fans. Turner’s offensive tweets occurred in 2011 and 2012—if you would like to see them for yourself, they are here. He issued an apology on Sunday night:

“There are no excuses for my insensitive and offensive language on Twitter. I am sincerely sorry for those tweets and apologize wholeheartedly. I believe people who know me understand those regrettable actions do not reflect my values or who I am. But I understand the hurtful nature of such language and am sorry to have brought any negative light to the Nationals organization, myself or the game I love.”

According to the Washington Post, Turner’s tweets were uncovered by a Braves fan in apparent retaliation for a Nationals fan discovering Atlanta pitcher Sean Newcomb’s own offensive tweets.
