On Monday night, the NCAA women’s basketball tournament selection committee released its initial list of the top 16 teams that would make up seeds one through four in each region if the tournament started now. NC State is No. 7 overall, putting the Wolfpack on the 2-seed line.
The Wolfpack earned a three-seed in each of the last two NCAA tournaments but is in a position to do better this year and perhaps even contend for a No. 1 seed. NC State already has a win over Maryland at the top of its resume and will have a chance to knock off Louisville a week from Thursday. The Pack and the Cards only meet the one time in the regular season, so that’s a must-win game for any hopes of earning a top seed. (And winning the ACC regular season, probably.)
Getting that one-seed would be a heck of an accomplishment, and would also ensure that State avoids going to a region with Oregon, South Carolina, or Baylor. But the main thing is just being in the top 16, as that guarantees that the team’s first two tournament games will be played at home.
