Sunday marked the first truly disappointing performance of the season for NC State, which played far from its best in losing to North Carolina. The Wolfpack erased a seven-point halftime deficit to take a three-point lead into the fourth quarter, but the Tar Heels had enough answers.
NC State didn’t get enough perimeter production, finishing just 4-19 from three, while the Tar Heels—a 30% three-point shooting team—shot 11-26. It happens. None of State’s usual standouts played well, and that was a particular problem with Elissa Cunane spending the afternoon in foul trouble. Cunane played only 22 minutes, and fouled out. She also turned the ball over four times.
The Pack’s interior defense was good and State also won the rebounding battle, but a 42.3 eFG% day at the offensive end ain’t gonna cut it. Fortunately, performances like this aren’t common. It’s just a damn shame this one had to come against UNC.
NC State will see the Heels again in two weeks.
