NC State women’s hoops adds transfer guard Madison Hayes

NCAA Womens Basketball: SEC Conference Tournament-Mississippi State vs Louisiana State Dawson Powers-USA TODAY Sports

NC State’s six-player rotation was outstanding last season, but the Pack’s complete lack of reliable depth at guard was something Wes Moore needed to address. Mission accomplished: former Mississippi State guard Madison Hayes announced this afternoon that she is transferring to NC State.

Hayes, who has good size at 6’0, was a top-30 player in the 2020 class and a McDonald’s All-American. She made the SEC All-Freshman team this past year after averaging 4.7 points and 4.7 boards per game. She can play immediately and still has four years of eligibility remaining. This is a nice addition with obvious upside.

Hayes played a secondary role while on the court in 2021, accounting for only about 13% of the Bulldogs’ field goal attempts while she was on the floor. She shot 46.9% on twos and 38.5% on threes (just 26 attempts). She will need to work on that 48.5% free throw shooting (14-29), because getting to the line is a strength of hers.

She also proved an excellent rebounder at both ends, but particularly on the offensive side. State wasn’t anything special on the offensive glass as a team in 2021, so this is a bonus. I’m excited to see how she fits into the rotation next season.
