The men’s basketball team added Casey Morsell from UVA this afternoon, but the day’s biggest transfer news belongs to the women’s program. Rutgers transfer point guard Diamond Johnson, who averaged 17.6 points per game this season, has signed with the Wolfpack Women. She has four years of eligibility remaining.
Johnson was a top-10 recruit in the 2020 class and was good enough as a freshman to earn second-team All-Big Ten honors; she was the second-leading scorer on a Scarlet Knights team that reached the NCAAs.
She was one of the most efficient scorers in the country, ranking 46th with a 61.6 eFG%. She shot 90.2% at the free throw line, 56.1% from two, and 45.5% from three. That’s not bad for her first year in high-major basketball.
She’ll give Wes Moore a kind of scorer he hasn’t had at the guard position, and NC State’s rotation now has a frightening amount of balance from guard to wing to forward. State’s offense was elite 2021 and can be downright nasty in 2022.
With the additions of Johnson and Madison Hayes, State’s backcourt went from thin to versatile overnight, and Moore finds himself with all kinds of lineup flexibility with a rotation that will comfortably go eight deep.
