Shadrach Thornton released a lengthy statement Thursday to address his dismissal from the football program after his most recent arrest. Thornton was arrested Tuesday night and dismissed from the program less than 24 hours later. Pack Pride has the full statement; here's a portion:

I would like to start off with an apology; it was never my intention to bring disgrace to this community, university or the staff. I am elated at the opportunities that I've had here at the University, and I deeply apologize for the position that I've put you in.

This still sucks all the way around, that's safe to say. It's pretty much the only thing I've determined for certain about this whole ordeal. Credit to Thornton for the attitude he's displaying here, and I'll be pulling for him to get his shot at the NFL.

NC State will move on with the same backfield it used during the first two weeks of the season, with Matt Dayes handling a lot of the work while getting support from Dakwa Nichols, Reggie Gallaspy, and Jaylen Samuels.

While the circumstances surrounding Shadrach Thornton's latest run-in with the law were a bit peculiar, it turned out to be the final straw for the NC State running back. NC State announced Wednesday evening that Thornton has been dismissed from the team, but Dave Doeren also said in his statement, "we will continue to support him academically and help him earn his degree."

Thornton was arrested at his apartment Tuesday after leaving the scene of a minor accident. Thornton was riding a moped on a sidewalk near campus and hit a pedestrian, causing him some minor injuries, including a busted lip that needed a few stitches.

The whole sequence of events remains unclear, but in any case Thornton was charged with failing to provide information/aid, a class-one misdemeanor.

And so it ends like this for Shad, who'd survived multiple suspensions to remain on the Wolfpack roster, including a suspension for the first two games of 2015. Despite missing those games, Thornton is second on the team with 203 rushing yards.

-----------------------------

Only a couple of weeks after completing a two-game suspension, NC State running back Shadrach Thornton is back in legal trouble, and this time it may mean the end of his Wolfpack football career. Thornton was arrested on Sept. 29 for a failure to give info/aid under NC statute 20-166(B). In other words, Thornton was involved in an auto accident and may have fled the scene.

Here is the statute in question:

In addition to complying with the requirements of subsections (a) and (a1) of this section, the driver as set forth in subsections (a) and (a1) shall give his or her name, address, driver's license number and the license plate number of the vehicle to the person struck or the driver or occupants of any vehicle collided with, provided that the person or persons are physically and mentally capable of receiving such information, and shall render to any person injured in such crash reasonable assistance, including the calling for medical assistance if it is apparent that such assistance is necessary or is requested by the injured person. A violation of this subsection is a Class 1 misdemeanor.

Also found this:

Hit and Run: Driver's Failure to Give Information or Assistance When Injury or Death Occurs

- If a person is guilty of hit and run: failure to give information or assistance when injury or death occurs, then the individual is guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor under N.C. Gen. Stat. § 20-166(b).

I am not going to speculate about the circumstances of the incident, but what is detailed based on the charge is that someone was hurt in an accident, and Shadrach Thornton did not meet all of his responsibilities as a party to said accident.

I should note as well that Thornton is being charged with a Class-1 misdemeanor, which does not guarantee jail time but obviously is not something you want to add onto your pre-existing pile of legal problems. Thornton has had to deal with multiple legal issues during his time at NC State, including an arrest on assault charges. He was suspended for the first two games of the 2015 season for failing a drug test.

Thornton's been suspended by Dave Doeren on multiple occasions, which is why this latest misstep looks like the end of Shad's NC State career. Shad's not helping his case with stuff like this also pending:

One misdemeanor, or one moving violation, or one drug violation, and maybe that's something you can rationalize your way around. Dave Doeren's gone that far, and then some. But a pattern of legal mistakes has to have significant consequences at some point, and a suspension does not qualify.

Thornton had worked his way back into Doeren's good graces over the summer, and as much as we'd hoped that meant a harmonious 2015 season, we've not been so lucky. I just hope Shad is able to get his life sorted out at this point, because it's been an alarming couple years for a dude who comes off as bright and affable.
